Biography

François-Xavier de Vaujany is a full Professor of Management & Organization Studies at PSL, Université Paris-Dauphine. His research is focused on the emergence and legitimation of digital innovations and new forms of organizations. He explores in particular the role of materiality, embodiment and time in the process of legitimation of collaborative entrepreneurship or new research practices. His ongoing research is focused on collaborative practices in open contexts, e.g. open sciences, citizen sciences, maker movement, digital nomads, coworking and campus/corporate tours.

Professor de Vaujany draws on sensible and narrative ontologies to understand the corporeal, material and temporal dimensions of open organizational forms. His most recent research explores the co-production of a new research method (Open Walked Event-Based Experimentations, OWEE) which aims at producing knowledge commons in the city. His ongoing fieldworks includes ethnographies of tours of campus and collaborative spaces (e.g. coworking spaces, makerspaces, FabLabs and hackerspaces), ethnography of makerspaces in Paris and New York (and the issue of silence), a study of digital nomadism and nomadic ways of organizing, a survey of new work practices in and after business schools (Enquête FNEGE 2019 co-coordinated with Pierre Yves Gomez) and involvement in the co-production of the OWEE method.

François-Xavier has been visiting professor in numerous leading institutions, e.g. Cambridge University (JBS, 2000), Copenhagen Business School (2005), LSE (ISIG, 2008), McGill University (Desautels department, 2013), Stockholm Business School (2016), HUJ (2017) and NYU (2019-2020), among others.

His research has been published in top-tier MOS (Organization Science, Organization, Information & Organization, Management Learning, Culture & Organization, Management & Organizational History, Journal of Management History…) and MIS (Information Systems Research, European Journal of Information Systems, JSIS, Journal of Information Technology, ITP…) journals. He has authored or co-edited eleven books. He received several awards, e.g. the Academy of Management  best paper award (OCIS division) in 2013 (in coll. with Wlad Fomin, Stefan Haefliger and Kalle Lyytinen). His next book, co-edited with Karen Dales and Jeremy Aroles, will be Experiencing the New World of Work: The End of Management?, London: Cambridge University Press.

François-Xavier de Vaujany has co-founded in 2011 (with Nathalie Mitev) the Organizations, Artifacts and Practices (OAP) workshop (focused on the materiality turn in management and organization studies (http://workshopoap.dauphine.fr/). He has also co-founded in 2014 and chairs the Research Group on Collaborative Spaces (RGCS), an academic network and think tank exploring new work practices in and through collaborative spaces. Both networks organize free, open science-oriented events. He is an active member of the European Group on Organization Studies (EGOS) and the Academy of Management (AoM), OMT and OCIS divisions. He is the co-director of the Master Business Consulting & Digital Organizations (MBC) exploring new ways of working of and for consultants & researchers.
